MOM'S CLOSET: CHRISTMAS DAY

BY JAMIE STUM + LAURA LEE BOSWELL

If you’re like me, your kids usually have Christmas outfits before Thanksgiving weekend is over. But between cooking, wrapping, decorating and buying, I’m lucky if I’m not digging through my closet while the guests ring the doorbell. Our January curator took the guesswork out of the equation this year and shares some festive Christmas Day outfit ideas. In Laura’s words…

This look shows that casual and comfortable doesn’t have to mean boring. It’s a fun option for Christmas party or if you’re going out with friends around the holidays. Blanket scarves are such a huge trend this year, plus it adds warmth – I’ve even worn this one like a cape at times. I like pattern mixing and layering to add some visual interest to an outfit and houndstooth and plaid are great for mixing in fall and winter. The heels are a fun switch up from traditional holiday colors. I figure if you’re going to make something stand out, it should always be the heels!

This look would be great for a dressier holiday party, religious services or a Christmas concert. A black heel would be the most expected choice here but I added a metallic heel to give it a little glitz and glam. If you live somewhere warmer, you could also make this dress a little trendier by adding a long vest and pairing it with booties.

I’ve worn this outfit a couple of times for holiday events, even once to my office. The midi skirt is such a fun length and can still work for someone like me who is short. Since the skirt is so busy, I liked mixing it with the black top, but added some interest by choosing one with lace. To accessorize, I wanted to keep it simple but still visual with a dainty gold chain and a stone. Long necklaces elongate the body and I’m always on the lookout for ones that are interesting.
